Korg USA acquires famous brand of bass guitars Aguilar Amplification

Aguilar Amplification, the bass guitar brand best known for its amplifiers and pedals, has been acquired by Korg USA.

Aguilar announced the news of the acquisition in an email [obtained by MusicTech] sent to its business partners. According to the email, the company was renamed Aguilar Musical Instruments LLC effective January 1, 2021.

Aguilar President Dave Boonshoft will remain in his position as a consultant in charge of product development. The address and personnel of the brand’s factory will remain unchanged and orders will continue to be fulfilled according to the same procedures.

In the email, Dave Avenius, Managing Director of Aguilar, called the acquisition “the next chapter in Aguilar’s history”.

“Aguilar Amplification has spent the past 25 years designing legacy products and continually raising the bar for the bass guitar world,” he wrote. “To help us take the brand to the next level, we have decided to sell the company to Korg USA, one of the most respected companies in our industry.”

Musictech.net has contacted Korg USA and Aguilar for comment. Stay tuned for more on this story.

Aguilar Amplification was launched in 1995 with the all-tube bass preamp DB680. Boonshoft, a working New York bassist, teamed up with technician Alex Aguilar to create a preamp with the qualities of studio gear, like those from Neve and Telefunken. The name of the DB680 itself was a nod to the Fairchild 670 tube compressor, of which Boonshoft was a big fan.
